JULY 2024
Woodturner of the Month
GLENNA PITTS

Glenna Pitts is our July Woodturner of the Month. She is a native Oregonian and has been a member of Beaver State Woodturners for a year.
Glenna’s interest in Woodturning began when she took a pen-turning class at the Campbell Community Center where Larae Palmer and Richard Wright were the instructors. (By the way, she praised Larae and Richard as GREAT instructors)!
Glenna shared that she has only turned pens and a seam ripper. She shared that she used acrylic for the seam ripper and it came out pretty neat. She is still learning about the differences in wood. She also shared that she is still so new to this process - “I would like to learn to turn bowls, and just get more comfortable with turning anything.”
Glenna’s advice to new turners is to stay at it and don't get discouraged when something doesn't turn out - “I have learned that you cannot learn if you do not make mistakes and just continue to try it again”.
Glenna ended with, “Sadly, I have not gotten deep into this form of art because life seems to get in the way some!! I am hoping to get "back at it" this summer. Richard and Larae have been so supportive, helpful, and encouraging with getting me into the craft. I love seeing the demonstrations and am in awe of how easy the members make it look!
The area where I have my lathe is in my garage so it is small and I am still working on getting it more "workable" for use. I find I need to make time and be more time- disciplined, and really just go for it - so food for thought for everyone including me.
Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself - and hope to meet other "newbies" in the future.

THANK YOU GLENNA

“WOODTURNER OF THE MONTH”

JUNE MEETING RECAP
Mark brought the May meeting to order which was attended by 24 in-house and 1 online. We had a visitor from Alaska, Isaac Litster. WELCOME Isaac! Mark introduced the POSTER Challenge for an Oregon Woodturning Symposium Banner at the 2025 Symposium. Mark reminded everyone of the sponsors and discounts available through them. Because of a mix-up in scheduling, Richard Worthey stepped in and used pieces of wood from the wood raffle table and turned a bowl and a spindle. Thank you, Dick!
The challenge winners were announced: First Place: David Laaksonen (a $20 Woodcraft gift card) and Mike Nasholm was chosen from the remaining challenges to get a bottle of Doctors Workshop finish from Mike Meredith. The winner of the BROWN BAG was Larae Palmer brought in by Dick Worthey. The BLUE ticket winners were Chet Houser and our visitor Isaac Litster. CONGRATULATIONS to ALL!

The winning photo should be 2MB or more to be detailed enough to be blown up for a poster. The photographer and turner’s name will be included on the poster.
Please have your entries submitted by Friday July 5th at midnight. Voting will take place from Saturday, July 6th until Monday, July 8th at NOON. We have already received 2 entries. This is an opportunity to have your work seen all over Oregon.

All the way from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, the Rainbow Eucalyptus lives up to its name. As the bark peels away, it reveals a spectrum of colors, creating a natural work of art in the forest. If you like how it looks, we have good news for you: you can plant one of these bad boys in your backyard if you live in an area where the temps are above 50°F (10°C).
