MAY 2024
Woodturner of the Month
CHET HOUSER

Chet Houser is our May “Woodturner of the Month”. Chet, a native Oregonian, has been a member of BEAVER STATE WOODTURNERS since 2008. He shared that he was getting ready to retire and knew he needed something to keep his mind occupied! Too many fellas went off the deep end with booze, or a motorcycle, or worse, so why not try this turning thing.
He went to a turning demonstration at the old Eugene Woodcraft store where he turned a pen for military personnel and thought it would make a great hobby. The best part was that you could do something in an hour or less and not tie up a tiny shop with parts to a piece of furniture all over, and deal with finishes, paint brushes, etc.
Chet enjoys turning pens and natural edge bowls. He finds that pens are easy to do, and make nice gifts. People don't always know what to do with a bowl, and after you do one for them, then what. You can give pens to the entire family, for different events, etc. He thinks the ones that take a gel pen are the best, and he finds they get the best responses from folks.
Chet likes to use Walnut and Figured woods. He likes to put different finishes and stains on the figured wood to bring out the character. Turning deep vases is a skill Chet would like to learn but currently he doesn't have the equipment to do them. Chet finds them fascinating, when one considers how thin you can make them with the special equipment used to measure their depth and thickness.
Chet’s advice to new turners is to learn the proper techniques and how to sharpen your tools first. Work on the basics until you have the techniques down, then challenge yourself. If you don't have a failure once in a while you aren't pushing yourself to learn new things. Inside-Out candlesticks, captured ring goblets, turn tables on a lazy Susan, and natural edge bowls are all things that will challenge you.
Chet shared that he has always enjoyed the camaraderie in the club meetings. You can ask questions, learn new things, and get wood for projects at a really nice price!
Thank you Chet for being our WOODTURNER of the MONTH! Here are some of Chet’s beautiful work:

WOODSHOP TOUR
ROBERT DAVIS

My experience with wood turning began in 8th grade woodshop at Cal Young Junior high. After several
projects that mostly created a couple small piles of wood shavings my turning days went dormant until the
spring of 2001. I decided to take a couple of woodturning classes at our community college in Klamath
Falls. Our class of about a dozen students met at the instructor’s wood shop. It was stuffed with wood
working tools and machinery. Large and small lathes were scattered throughout the shop. I was hooked,
I had to get a lathe! It’s a Grizzly. That was followed by a band saw, bench grinder, drill press, table saw,
planer and a variety of power and hand tools. In 2020 we relocated to Eugene, my home town.
I was fortunate that our home included a 12 foot by 20 foot shop.

I soon learned of Beaver State WoodTurners and began attending monthly club meetings.
The demonstrations provide great inspiration and broadening my knowledge of many turning techniques.
Myrtle wood is my favorite wood but cherry and maple are also a great choice. Grain figure is a major
factor in my wood selection. I seem to favor small to midsize projects.
There are several improvements that I am planning for my shop. I
have an air filtration system (JET) that really removes a lot of fine dust from the air but a dust collection
system would really improve the air quality in the shop. There’s an 8 foot by 12 foot porch attached to
the back of the shop. I plan to close it in and locate a dust collection unit in that room. Having the unit
separated from the main part of the shop should save floor space and limit the noise from the
collection unit. The new room will come in handy for wood storage too.
The shop is lit by fluorescent lighting. LED flat panel fixtures on the ceiling would be a significant improvement.
Happy turning and see you at the next woodturning meeting!
