JUNE 2024

                         Woodturner of the Month

Dan Martin

Dan, a native of Oakland, CA has been a member of BEAVER STATE WOODTURNERS since October 2023.  He grew up in  Richmond and Pinole, CA.  He became interested in woodturning when he was given a FREE Harbor Freight lathe.

Dan shared that he doesn’t really have a favorite item to turn but he does like to turn small boxes, bowls, tops, and pens.  He is enjoying learning to use the tools.  At the moment, Dan doesn’t have a favorite wood type of wood and takes whatever he can get.

He would like to get better at selecting the right wood and tools for things he wants to do. Dan also wants to get better at using the tools well enough that he doesn’t  need much sanding.

Dan’s advice to new turners is to watch videos and demonstrations and try to do what appeals to you.  Don't get discouraged when something goes south on you because it will.

Dan ended by sharing that he has learned a lot by watching the demos at club meetings and listening to the advice of members with experience as he is still very much a novice.

A guy's wife steps into the shop and asks if he would do some wood turning on the lathe. "Of course," he replies, "What do you need? Maybe a new bowl or possibly a rolling pin or a vase? I have Persimmon, Hickory, Mesquite, Walnut and some Oak. What would you like?" "Oh, I don't care," his wife says. "I just need about six bags of shavings for the flower beds."
